A few years back I read this essay by Randy Alcorn and thought, yep, that’s me…and it wasn’t a happy thought.
And if you’re anything like me, you too, want to meet others’ needs when you’re feeling healthy, wealthy, and wise too…and yet…that isn’t normally how life plays out…and here’s why.
We like to serve from the power position. We’d rather be healthy, wealthy, and wise as we minister to the sick, poor, and ignorant. But people hear the gospel best when it comes from those who have known difficulty. If we share God’s word yet have little personal familiarity with suffering, the credibility gap makes it difficult to speak into others’ lives. But our suffering levels the playing field.
Through suffering we become powerless so that we might reach the powerless.
